History & Namesake

The original Ben Milam Elementary opened as Union Grove Elementary in 1925. During the summer of 1928, a modern four room wooden school was built for the Union Grove school. At the end of the 1928-1929 school term, all school buildings of the district were renamed for Texas heroes. The beginning of the 1929-1930 school term found Union Grove Elementary named Ben Milam Elementary, located in Grangerland.

The school is named for Ben Milam, who was a military leader in the battle for Texas independence.
